Starving Artist Syndrome

Starving Artist Syndrome

Wikipedia introduces us to The Starving Artist

A starving artist is an artist who sacrifices material well-being in order to focus on their artwork. They typically live on minimum expenses, either for a lack of business or because all their disposable income goes toward art projects. Related terms include starving actor and starving musician.

Some starving artists desire mainstream success but have difficulty due to high barriers to entry in fields such as the visual arts, the film industry, and theatre. These artists frequently take temporary positions such as waiters or other service industry jobs while they focus their attention on “breaking through” in their preferred field.

Accomplished artists may well be schooled in their craft, yet not schooled in business. Family members have asked why you, the artist, why you don’t get a “real job.” There’s a disconnect when the artist doesn’t recognize his business needs. Something must be done.

Well, there are 2 choices:

  1. Take the time and put in the effort to understand what marketing is and learn how to employ marketing tools, or
  2. Have someone do the marketing for you

Much like every other small business, you the artist, aka the small businessman, has to understand the difference between working in your business as distinct from working on your business.

When you realize the need to market and decide on #1 or #2 above you will be more successful faster and “eat better!”

  1. Like other professionals, skill at your craft and desire/ability/time to market your skill don’t always go together. Having someone who knows how and loves doing it seems like a great partnership.
